The altimeter not only provides the sea surface height, it also provides the wave height. The magnitude and shape of the altimeter echoes contain
information about the characteristics of the surface, such as the wave height.

The SWH increases with latitude and reaches a maximum around 50o-55o.

Outside the subtropical region, wave height is highly dependent on the season, especially in the high latitude regions.
